Recently, you may have become aware of media attention involving a notice of recall for certain Fujifilm Irvine Scientific oil products. In light of this, we wanted to let you know that at Reproductive Specialists of the Carolinas (RSC), we do not, and have never, used these products in our center.
Why Was This Product Recall Needed?
On Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, Fujifilm Irvine Scientific issued a voluntary recall notice of their Oil for Embryo Culture (Light Mineral Oil). This was in response to a Los Angeles couple’s complaints that this oil resulted in the deaths of their embryos, and may have destroyed those of other fertility patients.
Typically, this oil is used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures to protect cultured embryos and prevent them from drying out. However, it appears that a batch of Fujifilm Irvine Scientific oil sent to fertility clinics was found to be toxic. Upon receiving reports of the oil not working as intended, the company investigated further, leading to the recall.
RSC Patients Protected From Oil Risks
Again, RSC does not and has never used Fujifilm Irvine Scientific oil products in our center. We look forward to continuing to provide you with safe, effective fertility care.
